Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MBBS, MD) who are licensed to diagnose and treat mental illnesses, can prescribe medications, provide medical interventions and offer a range of treatment modalities such as psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Whereas Psychologists hold degrees in Psychology and primarily focus on psychological assessment, counseling and psychotherapy. Both psychiatrists and psychologists play important roles in the field of mental health and can collaborate to provide comprehensive care to individuals in need

Psychiatric medications are prescription drugs. Not all psychiatric medications are habit forming or addictive. The potential for addiction to psychiatric medications also varies depending on the specific medication being prescribed. It's important to remember that the decision to use psychiatric medications should be made in consultation with a qualified healthcare professional / Psychiatrist and taken only according to the prescription. They will consider your individual needs, weigh the potential benefits against the risks and provide guidance throughout your treatment journey. Open communication and adherence to their instructions can help mitigate the risk of addiction and ensure the safe and effective use of these medications.

Medical supervision and timely monitoring of the patient is a crucial step in the recovery process. If you have volunteered as a secondary caregiver, do ask a psychiatrist about the duration and time of the medication that is prescribed, so you will be well and fully prepared should there be a need for gradual tapering off and avoid an unwanted occurrence of abrupt discontinuation.

Psychiatric evaluations cannot determine a definite treatment period as successful procedures also depend on the patient's co- operation. However, it is always good to ask a psychiatrist about a general rehabilitation plan and treatment duration experienced by previous patients, as it will give you a clearer picture on expectations and outcomes.

Before any medication is prescribed, the patient's medical history is thoroughly analyzed. However, just as a precautionary measure, ask a psychiatrist about possible side-effects or behavioral changes that should and should not be expected after taking the medication.

Treatment procedures may be long, require multiple visits to the clinic and take time to showcase improvements. As a caregiver to someone who is mentally ill, asking a psychiatrist about the ultimate results of the treatment, will help you understand how to deal with it better.

Dependency and substance abuse don't just stem from illegal narcotics. Even prescription medications can be abused by patients if they start feeling an increased need for it beyond the required treatment duration or dosage. To avoid such instances from happening, ask a psychiatrist about the effects of the medication and how best to tackle the abuse of it.
